Eduard Azarian – President, Program Director & Boys Team Head Coach

  • Originally from the Soviet Union, Eduard comes from a tradition of excellence in the sport of gymnastics. Following in the footsteps of his father, the famous Albert Azarian, Eduard is a second generation World Champion & Olympic Gold Medal Winner.
    Eduard's credits include:
  • 1975 All Around Junior National Champion of the USSR
  • 1976 Member of the USSR Senior National Team
  • 1976-1979  Winner of several international competitions
  • 1978  Silver medalist of the World Championship in France
  • 1979  P Bars Gold medalist at World Cup Championship in Japan1979 All-Around Champion Spartakaide

Marina Azarian - General Manager

Marina has over 12 years experience in gymnastics business management. From 1997-2005, Marina was the business office manager at a top Northern Orange County Gymnastics Academy. Prior to that, she served as the office assistant at a Los Angeles County Gymnastics Center. Marina has extensive experience in human resources, marketing material development, web site management, scheduling, as well as member communication and community relations. Marina is a graduate of Armenian State University, where she studied English, Armenian, Russian and German languages. Her credentials include teaching and translating.

Vanessa Gonzalez-Excel Program Director, Academy Director, Girls Team Coach, Office Personnel

Vanessa has been coaching gymnastics since 2002.  Following in her sisters foot steps she joined the sport at the age of 2 and has lived in it ever since.  She has coached preschool through girls competitive level 9 but focuses on the compulsory levels and excel.  She believes that instilling the right foundation in gymnastics is critical for future progress.  She has also spent the last few years assisting in the management of another major Orange County gym.  Her coaching philosophy is “You can only get out of this sport what you put into it.  That includes coaches!  You can’t expect your child to go out there and dominate unless you have embedded in her every single day the tools needed to achieve her goals!  Work your girls hard but work yourself harder, give them confidence and pride and demand perfection because if you don’t they wont strive for it!  They will surprise you with what they can achieve!” 


 

Joette Orman - Little Champions Director and Instructor

Joette has been involved with gymnastics and acrobatics since she began in a Parent-N-Me gymnastics class at 18 months of age. She started coaching gymnastics and training in the Great Y Circus when she was 13 and has never stopped. When she was 17, she created and directed the gymnastics and cheer tumbling program at the Redlands YWCA.  Joette has performed nationally and internationally as a professional acrobat for the past 10 years. She has performed multiple times for the Laker's halftime, Redwings pregame, and many corporate and theme park shows. She has traveled all over the U.S. with the Moscow State Circus and has spent many months performing internationally, such as in Japan and Switzerland. Joette also performed in Cirque De La Mer for the first 3 seasons. She currently teaches ground and aerial acrobatics as well as performing the gypsy character at Pirate's Dinner Adventure. She is an ACE certified personal trainer and a nationally registered EMT. She currently works part time on an ambulance and is an active member of FEMA's Disaster Response Team. She is also currently pursuing a degree in psychology.

 

Albina Azarian – Office Manager & Special Events Coordinator

Albina has over eight years of working in the gymnastics office environment as an office manager, special events coordinator and an academy supervisor. Albina has grown up in the world of gymnastics and dance. She did gymnastics for five years and has danced for over nine years in Hip Hop and Jazz. Albina has coached gymnastics for Levels 1-5 including Pre Team and Competitive Team. She has also helped choreograph a routine for a North Orange County dance company that she was training and performing with. Currently, Albina is the office manager & special events coordinator at Azarian Gymnastics.


 

Perry Davies – Girls Team Head Coach

Perry is a former gymnast. He was the All Around Regional champion in 1986 and a National qualifier in 1987. Perry has seven years of coaching experience, working with both boys and girls teams, levels 5 - 10.   “To me there is no greater feeling than watching a child succeed.   My favorite motto is, "You have to show them how much you care, before they care how much you know"

 

Erika Purtell - Compulsory & Optional Girls Team Coach

 

Erika’s life passion is gymnastics. Born and raised in Long Beach she started her gymnastics career at the holding several state, regional and national titles on those events.  Erika worked as the optional beam and floor coach for one of the biggest gyms in Orange County, producing two level 10 state champions, one regional champion, national champions and five division I scholarships.  After she went on to establish and head coach the St. Joseph High School gymnastics team where they went to place 5th at CIF finals. Erika believes “in instilling every child with the right work ethic, motivation and technique to achieve gymnastics greatness.”

Christy Dean - Girls Team Coach

Christy grew up in Northern CA and has been involved in the sport of gymnastics since age 3. She quickly developed a passion for the sport and after several years was training 6 days per week. She competed through the optional levels and began coaching in 1996 during her last competitive season. She was voted 2003 Nor-Cal Compulsory Coach of the Year. She moved to Southern CA in 2005. She is very detail and technique-oriented and over the years her athletes have had tremendous success. She has been the personal coach to 58 State Champions, 12 TOPs National Team members and 7 State Championship Winning Teams. Christy has coached through Level 10. She loves coaching because of the positive qualities she is able to help develop in the gymnasts she works with and knowing she's helping them learn skills they will carry with them their entire lives. She is also a Nutritionist with a private practice in Laguna Beach. Her favorite quote is "You will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the one's you did."


 

Jennifer Fulton – Girls Pre Team & Team Coach

Jenni has been involved with the sport of gymnastics since the age of 4.  She competed for 15 years and up to Level 10.  Jenni qualified to multiple USAG Regionals, USAIGC Nationals and AAU Nationals.  She was USAIGC National Beam Champion in 1993.  Jenni was also part of the AAU National Team Champions in 1991.  Jenni has been coaching gymnastics for 9 years now and has coached every level from preschool to optionals.  Her primary specialty has been compulsory levels.  She has had multiple Level 5 teams place in the top 5 out of the state in both Georgia and California.  Jenni greatly enjoys the sport of gymnastics and wants to help every gymnast achieve their goals. “I set the bar high for all of my gymnasts, and through hard work and dedication, they always manage to achieve their goals along with  mine.”

 

April Littlejohn – Academy & Excel Instructor

April has been coaching gymnastics for five years. She has been part of the Adult Gymnastics program for eight years. April believes in teaching the kids with a positive attitude and a smile. "I believe that the kids should have fun, be encouraged to learn new skills and to always try their best." 

 

Debra Kelly – Office Personnel

Debra is a coach for our students with special needs and also enthusiastically assists with office responsibilities and events at the gym. Debra has an extensive background in counseling, public relations and marketing. She earned an MA from Pepperdine University and is licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. While maintaining a private practice, Debra specialized in adolescent and family counceling and has led tharapy groups and community workshops focusing on stress management and positive parenting. Debra greatly enjoys teaching others about the extraordinary phychological benefits the sport of gymnastics provides including the development of self-confidence, determination and overcoming fears.  

 

Daniel Goglanian – Academy & Adult Program Instructor

Coach Daniel has been coaching gymnastics since 1992.  With a heart for kids and a desire to see them grow and develop, he enjoys teaching academy classes ranging from beginning boys through pre-team.

Daniel began gymnastics at age 14 and competed throughout high school. He now coaches because it gives him the chance to connect with kids one-on-one - and along with their parents and teachers - provide them with the skills necessary to do well in life.  “I try to create an encouraging environment in which each child can feel accepted, have fun, be challenged and do things they never thought they could!  Once a child understands that the disciplines gain them the freedom to do what they really love, they excel! It’s always a pleasure to see the boys move through the levels, build their confidence and develop into not just amazing athletes, but capable young men with the character and values to sustain their successes.”

Daniel enjoys working at Azarian U.S. Gymnastics Training Center because it is a family atmosphere with capable and caring coaches and staff!  And he always welcomes parents to inquire about their child’s progress.

Coach Daniel is CPR and Safety certified and also teaches an adult gymnastics class for those who’d like to condition or improve upon their current skills.  When he is not coaching, Daniel is a recruiter for an Arts College and works with the youth at his church.

 


 

Hope Litton – Academy Instructor

Hope has been coaching gymnastics for 4 years.  She is a former gymnast and went up to Level 7.  Hope enjoys coaching, watching students succeed, as well as helping to raise the children's self-esteem.

 

Brett Hamby - Academy Instructor

Brett is currently a student at UC Irvine, majoring in chemistry and minoring in drama. Brett was a gymnast for ten years up to Level 10. Brett has been coaching since he was 16 and he loves it. His philosophy is "if you love it and you are determined, you can get anywhere!"

 

Kathryn Endo - Academy Instructor

Kathryn is pursuing a double major in dance and drama at UC Irvine, where she is also a member of the Campuswide Honors program. She is currently training in ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical, hip hop, and modern, and is thrilled to be dancing up to eight hours a day, six days a week. She loves working with kids, whether it be coaching dance or gymnastics, and has been teaching since the age of 15, when she became a certified Women's Self-Defense and martial arts instructor. For Kathryn, the most wonderful part of her job is getting to share her love for these arts with the children she coaches, and her philosophy is that, "A coach can ask for no more and no less than a student's best, and teaching a child to do their best in any activity is a great way to help them excel in life."

 

Stephanie Purtell - Academy and Excel Instructor

Stephanie participated in gymnastics when she was young, but was around the competitive sport for many years. She is involved in dance and interested in pursuing nursing. She recently started coaching and loves working with children. "There is no better feeling than seeing the smile on a gymnast's face when they finally nail the skill that has been causing them so mush frustration." She believes that each gymnast has their own individual strengths and weaknesses and that sometimes even the smallest improvement can be the greatest accomplishment. 

 

Andrew Duron - Academy Instructor

Andrew is a great addition to our coaching staff. Led into coaching by his coach Eduard Azarian, he was eager to experience gymnastics in another perspective. "Mr. Azarian made me the gymnast that I am today and taught me everything I know about gymnastics". Andrew enjoys Extreme Chess, long walks on the beach, and jumping off of things. His coaching philosophy is "nobody is perfect, but anyone can try".

 

Michael Custodio - Boys Pre Team Instructor

Michael has been a member of Azarian Gymnastics Training Center since the age of three and joined the competitive team at the age of four. He was formerly a three-time member of the National Future Stars Team, a two time J.O. Nationals Qualifier, Region One Select Team Member, and Region One All Around Champion in 2004. Michael has currently moved on to coaching the Azarian Gymnastics Boys’ team along the side of his mentors Eduard Azarian and Tim Klempnauer. He believes that gymnastics raises an individuals self esteem and the sport produces young athletic individuals who are capable of reaching any goal they desire to pursue.


 

Brittney Terberg - Academy, Little Champions & Excel Instructor

Brittney started gymnastics at the age of 3. By the time she turned 5 she was training for team. Brittney started competing at the age of 10. Over the years she have competed in Sectional, State and Regional championships. "Gymnastics has always been a big part of my life and has taught me how to work hard and set goals.  I love coaching and hope to help kids achieve the same opportunities."

 

Michelle Sprott - Tiny Tumblers, Super Tots & Little Champions Instructor

Michelle participated in formal gymnastics as a youth from age 5 through 18 and assisted in coaching younger students during that time.  Michelle has a degree in elementary education and taught for several years in the K-2 age group.  After staying home with her two children when they were young Michelle taught tumbling, physical education and pre-school related classes to children ages 5 months to 9 years at a children’s gym for 3 years prior to joining Azarian.  Michelle brings over 20 years of experience teaching and coaching young children.  Michelle enjoys helping the children at Azarian reach their goals and succeed in a positive, fun and rewarding atmosphere.

 


 

Andrea Cantrell - Super Tots, Little Champions & Academy Instructor

Andrea has been coaching gymnastics since 2004. She was involved in cheerleading throughout her elementary years. She continued cheerleading in middle school, as well as Drill Team. Once entering High School she began tumbling for High School Cheer. While in high school, Andrea also was involved in many sports; soccer, track and softball. After graduating, Andrea began coaching gymnastics. Andrea has coached gymnastics for levels 1-4. Andrea is CPR and safety certified. She currently attends Santiago Canyon College and Santa Ana College. Andrea is currently on the women’s Track & Field Team, where she holds the college record for the woman’s 4x100 Relay Race Team. Her coaching philosophy is “teach with all your might, love with all your heart and laugh until you just can’t stop.” Andrea’s favorite quote that she loves telling her students when they are down, “You begin to achieve when you begin to believe!” She believes it’s 100% true!

Andrea Sconberg-Little Champions & Academy Instructor

Andrea has been involved in gymnastics all her life.  She started in the Parent N Me classes with her twin sister when she was just an infant.  Andrea eventually worked her way up to the team level, competing nationally as a competitive level 10 gymnast. Andrea still remains active training and competing in Triathlons all over the state.  Andrea graduated from UCI last year with a BS in Biological Science and is hoping to pursue a career in pediatrics.  Andrea loves working with children, watching them enhance their skills and practice the sport she grew up in.


 

Melody Bader-Little Champions & Academy Instructor

Melody started gymnastics at the age of 6. She pursued her passion in tumbling for years to follow. She also has been dancing to various types of genres from the age of 4 including ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, etc. through graduating high school. Melody is currently in school and working towards a degree in law where she can pursue her dream of becoming a sports agent. On her off time, Melody enjoys playing ice hockey on a local co-ed adult league. Melody loves helping children realize the greatness of achievement through setting short term goals and determination in a fun, enthusiastic, caring and understanding way. She also believes that if the coaches are having fun doing their job and make it a fun environment, the excitement shows in their kids!

Iris Fulgencio-Academy Instructor

Iris is currently a senior at the University of California, Irvine. She is majoring in Public Health Sciences and minoring in Educational Studies. Iris grew up in Valencia, California, where she began her gymnastics career at Gymnastics Unlimited Home of the Pikes. She started gymnastics at the age of five and became a competitive gymnast at the age of eight. Her favorite aparatus was the balance beam. Iris trained level nine and then began coaching children from ages five to sixteen. She really enjoys working with children and finds it really rewarding to be able to help them reach their goals. "Gymnastics has set the foundation for who I am today. It has taught me discipline, time management, team work, and goal setting. I wouldn't be who I am today without engaging in the sport of gymnastics."
